How the app works, what it accepts and what happens to your data.
What this app does
Market Intelligence finds every company in a market you describe, for example “environmental consultancies in the UK”. It searches the web, reads each company's website, scores it against your brief and gives you a ranked shortlist to review. Your decisions then steer a second, sharper search.
Setting up a market
- Give the market a title and, optionally, a sentence or two of description. As you type the title we suggest well-known companies; click one to add it as a seed.
- We turn your description into a brief: a definition, what's in, what's out, the geography, other names for this kind of company and nearby categories to keep out. Edit any of it before you run the search.
- Phrase criteria positively (“sells consulting services” rather than “not a software company”). The scorer can't use negative wording.
How a search runs
A search moves through these stages; the progress page shows live counts for each:
- ○ Queued
- Accepted and about to start.
- ◐ Discovering
- Web searches, company search and “Top N” lists produce the long list. Directories, social networks and public bodies are excluded.
- ◐ Reading sites
- Each candidate's homepage is fetched and given a first score.
- ◐ Scoring
- Every criterion is asked of the best candidates, companies are placed in a taxonomy and related domains are grouped. You can start reviewing as soon as about 40 companies are scored.
- ● Ready
- The ranking is final. Screenshots may still be arriving.
- ⊘ Stopped (budget)
- The search reached its budget and kept everything it had found.
- ▲ Failed
- Something went wrong; the reason is shown and unspent budget is returned.
Reviewing quickly
The review console shows one company at a time: a full-page preview on the left and the evidence on the right. Decisions save in the background; there are no confirmations.
Ior→include ·Xor←exclude ·SskipUundo (up to 20) ·Oopen the live site in a new tabSpace/Shift+Spacescroll the preview ·123jump to its top, middle or bottom
Each company has three separate statuses: your decision (— undecided, ● included, ■ excluded, ◐ skipped), the signal from scoring (● likely in, ◐ review, ○ unlikely, ▲ site unreadable) and where it is in the pipeline.
Discover and Market
Every market is a two-step pipeline at the top of the page: 1 Discover N candidates → 2 Market M companies.
- Discover is the search and the review queue above: find companies, then include or exclude them. N is the candidates not yet in the Market.
- Market is the workspace over the companies you kept: a filter rail, the reference architecture, lenses and enrichment. A company is in the Market when you include it, or when you count its branch in (unless you excluded it).
A company can belong to more than one category. Markets searched before this feature show their single main category until they are re-categorised.
Filters and lenses
- The filter rail on the left narrows the list by category, size, revenue, country, ESG signals, news, your decision, starred, signal and sources. Counts beside each option ignore that facet's own selection, and bars show proportions.
- Lenses are the Market views of the same companies: List, Cluster (categories as clusters of logo tiles), Category analysis (grid plus per-category stats), News & events (a timeline) and ESG (a heatmap of ESG signals). Discover offers List and Reference architecture.
Reference architecture
The reference architecture is a heatmap of the market's categories, three levels on one screen: a dark band per top-level branch, its sub-branches as rows beside it, and up to six categories on each row. A cell's shade is how common that category is among the companies currently shown; hover a cell for the count.
- Filter view uses the grid to narrow the list: click a branch to see only its companies.
- Decide branches lets you include or exclude a whole branch, core or edge, in one go, instead of company by company. Counting a branch in moves its companies into the Market (Discover goes down, Market goes up); company decisions always win.
Fast and Full enrichment
- Fast adds company details (size, location, industry), recent news and ESG signals. It costs about $0.005 per company; a 45-company run was about $0.22.
- Full (deeper research) is coming soon.
- Revenue marked “est.” is estimated from headcount, not reported.
- ESG signals come from a company's public web presence (what its site and public pages say). They are not ratings or audits.
- Logos are provided by Logo.dev.
Re-running, enriching and exporting
- Once you've included at least 3 companies, “Re-run from includes” searches again using them as seeds and only reads sites it hasn't seen.
- “Enrich” adds company details, news and ESG signals (see Fast and Full enrichment above), about $0.005 per company. Results are reused for 90 days.
- Export CSV downloads your includes (or everything) from the market's table.
- The taxonomy tab lets you rename, redefine, merge, split or delete categories. Each change saves a new version.
Costs and limits
- Each search has a budget: $3.00 by default, up to $5.00. A typical first search costs about $2.50–3.00; it stops at its budget and keeps what it found.
- Up to 20 searches, 500 enrichments and $25.00 of spend per rolling 24 hours. Your current usage is on the Settings page.
Privacy
Your markets, decisions and exports are private to your account. Public facts about websites (what a homepage says, its screenshot) are cached and shared between searches to save cost; your decisions never are. Previews are shown from a copy with scripts removed, so viewing one runs no code from the company's site.
API
Everything in the app is also available over a JSON API. Interactive reference docs are at /api/v1/docs; requests use your signed-in session.
